BMW I Series BMW i3 I01 first generation three-quarter front view in lane

The BMW i3 is introduced into dealerships in 2013. It is not only the first BMW with an electric motor, but also the first mass-produced vehicle ever with a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell. Its curb weight is similar to a normal compact car, even with the battery. Many BMW i3 components are also made of renewable raw materials.

The electric motor produces 170 hp (125 kW) with a torque immediately applied at full power. The BMW i3S, introduced in 2017, travels 10 km/h faster using 184 hp (135 kW). From 2016 the battery has a capacity of 94 Ah. The introduction of the BMW i3 with a 120 Ah cell means that the optional range extender (a gasoline engine to charge the battery) has been unavailable in German models since 2018. The range reaches up to 307 km (WLTP*) and the battery can be charged to 80% within 42 minutes at a fast charging station. Well over 200,000 vehicles have been built so far.

Production period: 2013 – today

Engines: Electric motor (125 – 134 kW, 170 – 184 hp), optional range extender available until 2018 (0.65 l gasoline engine, 28 kW, 38 hp)

Length/width/height: 3,999 – 4,011 mm/1,775 mm/1,578 mm

Range (electric): 307 km (WLTP*)

Striking and superior: these are the all-electric Gran Coupés BMW i4 eDrive40 and BMW i4 M50 models. The dynamic, slanted headlamps contribute to the four-door’s expressive character, as do the rear wheel arches and rear side windows which rise toward the tail.

Delivering up to 544 hp** (400 kW**) from an electric drive means unparalleled driving dynamics thanks to maximum torque, whatever the speed. The BMW i4 glides along smoothly while the occupants enjoy the comfort of its almost silent ride. And the meticulous, precise chassis and steering design always provide the best possible control. Sophisticated weight distribution and the interaction of the suspension and drive components all play decisive roles. The range of up to 590* kilometers (BMW i4 eDrive40 WLTP*) makes this electric vehicle extremely versatile and ideally suited to everyday use.

Production period: from the end of 2021

Engines**: Electric motor (250 – 400 kW, 340 – 544 hp)

Range: 416 – 590 kilometers (WLTP*)

[3]Official data for fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, power consumption and electric range was determined in accordance with the prescribed measuring procedure and corresponds to European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the applicable version. For ranges, data determined as per WLTP takes into account any optional equipment (available on the German market in this case). For vehicles newly type-approved since 01.01.2021, the official specifications exist only according to WLTP. In addition, NEDC values are deleted from the certificates of conformity as of 1 January 2023 by EC regulation 2022/195. For more information about NEDC and WLTP measuring procedures visit
Further information about fuel consumption and official model-specific CO2 emissions of new passenger cars can be found in the "Guideline for fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and electric power consumption for new passenger cars", available free of charge at all points of sale, at the Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH (DAT), Hellmuth-Hirth-Str. 1, 73760 Ostfildern-Scharnhausen, Germany, and under

*The published fuel consumption and CO2 emission figures are established according to legislated technical specifications (UNECE Regulation 101/UN Regulation 83 and SANS 20101 standards), which sets out the procedures that are used to measure the CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. The claimed figures are established using specific tests under standardised, carefully controlled conditions and may differ from consumption achieved under real world conditions with the influences of altitude, road surface, geographic conditions, vehicle options, temperature, humidity, tyres size and driving behaviour amongst others. EU Unladen mass refers to a vehicle with standard equipment, with 90% fuel tank fill, including a driver (68 kg) and luggage (7 kg). Optional extras and accessories will generally increase this figure. Please contact your preferred authorized BMW dealer or BMW South Africa (Pty) Ltd. for information on vehicles that are available for sale, and the various specifications and options of vehicles that are available. Trailer loads may not exceed the load stated for un-braked or for braked trailer and the max tow bar load may not exceed the value stated. Vehicle heights are measured without the aerial. The heights are slightly higher if measured over the aerial. Measurements are stated for vehicles with standard fittings and may vary when optional equipment is fitted. The technical data stated refers to the current version of the model selected. Due to certain legal regulations in different countries, deviations in the technical data described here can occur.
