The Active Steering offers a new dimension of steering comfort with precision, agility and comfort in every driving situation. At low speeds, such as while urban driving, parking or driving round sharp bends – Active Steering increases the steering angle.
The driver can precisely manoeuvre the vehicle with just a slight turn of the wheel, instead of having to steer with difficulty. This noticeably improves the agility of the new BMW X6 and makes parking easier.
For greater control in the upper speed range (from approx. 120 to 140 km/h, depending on the model and calibration), Active Steering has a more indirect effect on the steering. As a result, the Active Steering reduces the degree to which the wheels are turned. The advantage is that by being able to use larger turns of the steering wheel, the driver can control the wheels more accurately, resulting in increased stability and comfort.
Active Steering also intervenes to support the driver in the event of critical situations such as oversteer or braking on different road surfaces by dampening the yaw movements, for example, with lightning fast reaction time.
Because the Active Steering is a supplementary system with a hydraulic basis and does not disturb the direct connection between the driver and the wheels, the manoeuvrability of the new BMW X6 remains fully preserved even if the system breaks down. When the safety circuit in the adjustment mechanism detects any errors, a pin immediately blocks the Active Steering and returns control to the driver.
