The 2016 endurance racing season has officially kicked off at the Nürburgring Nordschlele in Germany with the VLN Endurance Championship. Amongst the early highlights of the season, was the BMW M6 GT3, which successfully completed its first race kilometres in the "Green Hell".

This debut was a great opportunity for the ROWE Racing, Schubert Motorsport and Walkenhorst Motorsport teams to test the BMW M6 GT3 under race conditions, ahead of the 24-hour race in May.

Overall there were some mixed but promising results. ROWE Racing used the event as an opportunity to fine-tune the BMW M6 GT3's performance. Schubert Motorsport followed suit, finishing outside of the top 10, but gaining a wealth of knowledge when it came to testing and troubleshooting.

Walkenhorst Motorsport enjoyed yet another success on the racetrack when one of their BMW M6 GT3's was placed 7th. The car was driven by Mattias Henkola (FI) and Michele Di Martino (DE). To finish in the top 10 during a debut is no small feat for both the drivers, and the BMW M6 GT3, to accomplish. It is a result to be proud of.

Overall, the teams were pleased with the outcome. While some cars were unable to finish due to technical difficulties, it was an opportunity to improve ahead of the next race. This is certainly only the beginning for the BMW M6 GT3 and fans can look forward to many more appearances on the track.

As many of the teams and drivers remarked, the day was one for learning - and in that pursuit was a great success.

Thanks to the combination of game-changing innovations, benchmarking comfort and flawless craftsmanship, with the all-new BMW 7 Series we are creating tomorrow’s luxury today.

The broad frame of the large and upright kidney grille is enhanced by its uniquely distinctive design detail. The air vents with their Chrome slats are visible and actively regulate the airstream. If the cooling demand for the engine increases, the air vents are opened. When closed they improve aerodynamics and ensure a striking presence.

The interior of the all-new BMW 7 Series is the ideal blend of ambient mood lighting, hand-crafted materials, spacious design and ground-breaking technology. The BMW Touch Command tablet with 7" display, integrated into the rear centre armrest, brings an unparalleled degree of control to passengers. Connected to the vehicle's systems, it offers comprehensive operation and setting options. Amongst other things, the tablet gives occupants the ability to adjust the rear and front passenger seats, air conditioning, interior lighting as well as control over various entertainment functions.

The Panorama glass roof Sky Lounge in the long wheelbase model creates an open and light-filled sensation of space and can be illuminated when required. An impressive mood is created by a light design made up of more than 15,000 light elements. The light design can be switched between the six colours of the Ambient interior lighting, creating an unforgettable atmosphere.

Lighting the future today is BMW Laserlight, a technology that illuminates up to 600 metres, twice that of conventional LED lights for exceptional night time visibility and safety. The BMW M4 GTS continues the success story of the BMW M3 GTS and steps into the long tradition of M3 leading high performance models. Advanced technology and engineering from BMW M GmbH assure of complete control on any road and track. This vehicle provides precise handling at high speed, it is proficiency in motion. Street legal and racetrack ready, it is undeniably exceptional.

The BMW M4 GTS is a legendary development fine-tuned to achieve even higher levels of performance. Recording a ground-breaking lap time of 7 minutes and 28 seconds on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds with 368 kW of output. The top speed is 305 km/h with performance enhanced by the innovative water-injection system.

Dramatically igniting the engine’s abilities, the revolutionary water-injection technology sprays water into the air intake collector and lowers the temperature of the air by 25 C. This then drops combustion heat, boosts engine efficiency and assures of unprecedented performance and power in the BMW M4 GTS.

Going to new extremes is the hallmark of the BMW M4 GTS. The M-specific 3-way coilover suspension with modified stabilizers and the milled aluminium swivel bearings enable the suspension to be lowered continuously up to a maximum of 20 mm at the front and 17 mm at the rear, and the damping can also be adjusted to suit the current driving situation. The compression level can be adjusted separately to enable quicker or slower compression. These modifications can be done for the compression and rebound stages to adapt to varied race track characteristics and requirements. The carbon rear wing has three settings to minimise comparable drag, dependent on road surface, or for absolute control over speed gain and power shift.

The BMW Group today reaffirmed its long term commitment to South Africa by announcing that it will invest a total of R6 billion at its Rosslyn Plant in Pretoria in the coming years. The investment, one of the biggest in the local automotive industry, will enable Plant Rosslyn to produce the next generation of the BMW X3, which will be sold locally and exported to various countries.

The production of the next generation BMW X3 at Plant Rosslyn will replace the BMW 3 Series Sedan, which will now be allocated to other plants within the global BMW production network. BMW Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, USA, will also continue to produce the next generation BMW X3.

“The potential for Africa as a future market for exports as well as the newly reviewed Automotive Production and Development Programme (APDP) enables South Africa to play a significant role in the manufacturing industry and production of high quality cars. This is evident in the J.D. Power Platinum Plant Quality award we received earlier this year. Our passion for perfection at BMW Plant Rosslyn has demonstrated that we are highly competitive within the global BMW production network both in terms of cost of production and quality. We are excited about the future prospects of Plant Rosslyn and cannot wait to start with the production of the next generation BMW X3. We believe there is an opportunity to increase the localisation of components when we start producing this car,” said Mr Tim Abbott, Managing Director of BMW Group South Africa.

More than three billion Rands (R3bn) will be invested in new state-of-the-art facilities and operations of the plant. An additional R3bn will be for suppliers, launch costs and training of associates.

“At the BMW Group, we constantly evaluate our plant allocation to ensure it reflects and accommodates market demand. With the decision to produce the next generation of the BMW X3 in Rosslyn we strengthen the position of South Africa in our global production network. It also follows our strategy that production follows the market. We will continue to adapt the BMW Group to meet future challenges,” says Mr Oliver Zipse, Chairman of BMW Group South Africa and Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Production.

Dr Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for BMW Sales and Marketing, and a previous Managing Director of BMW Group South Africa, says that the BMW X models have proved to be very desirable, ever since the BMW X5 founded the Sports Activity Vehicle segment in 1999. “These vehicles now represent some of the most successful model ranges in the BMW line-up, accounting for 28% of our total global sales. This realignment of production at Plant Rosslyn is in response to the continuing growth of the SAV segment worldwide and we will be expanding the X-range in the coming years, building the new X7 in Spartanburg, USA.”

During his address to staff at BMW Plant Rosslyn, Zipse said; “Your hard work and dedication have made Plant Rosslyn the best plant in the world in the Initial Quality Study 2015. This is the second time a BMW plant anywhere in the world has won a platinum award in the IQS Study. Congratulations on this award! You have shown that you are serious about your “passion for perfection.” Plant Rosslyn is an important part of our international production network. We want the success story of BMW Group South Africa to continue. We are here to stay.”
In June this year, BMW South Africa's Rosslyn Plant was awarded the Platinum Plant Quality Award in the J.D. Power 2015 Initial Quality Study (IQS) for producing BMW 3 Series models with the fewest defects or malfunctions. Plant Rosslyn last received this award in 2002 with an IQS score of 85 pp100 (problems per 100 vehicles surveyed).
The IQS is based on responses from more than 84,000 purchasers of new 2015 model vehicles surveyed after 90 days of ownership. The study was conducted between February and May 2015.
Plant Rosslyn is an iconic production facility within the BMW Group. Situated north of Pretoria, Rosslyn is the first foreign plant and was established in 1973, representing a cornerstone of the BMW Group's global production network of 30 sites in 14 countries. The plant currently produces the BMW 3 Series Sedan for local and export markets around the world. In 2014, BMW 3 Series Sedan exports from Plant Rosslyn increased by over 17% to 68,771. This mass export secured BMW South Africa's position as the country's leading exporter of premium vehicles. In February this year, Rosslyn reached another milestone producing its one millionth vehicle.
