BMW EfficientDynamics in the BMW 4 Series Coupé.

The BMW 4 Series Coupé has a comprehensive package of measures and technologies from BMW EfficientDynamics for more driving pleasure with fewer emissions.

AERODYNAMICS.

The entire vehicle design is testament to the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy. The optimised, aerodynamic front apron and undercarriage feature innovative improvements that reduce air resistance and fuel consumption.
The front apron is a prominent design feature that embodies the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy. The integrated Air Curtain channels air through two vertical air inlets and along the front wheel arches. The accelerated air flow creates a kind of ''curtain'' on the outer side of the wheels. Then there is the Air Breather, which channels the air flow at the front wheels. These innovative BMW EfficientDynamics technologies reduce turbulence and air resistance, which in turn, significantly reduces fuel consumption.

The flat undercarriage cover, which also shields the engine compartment, is an additional detail that greatly improves the car’s aerodynamics. This new trim elements are not only highly advantageous in terms of aerodynamics, they also improve sound insulation and provide greater protection from rust.

ECO PRO MODE.

As soon as you switch to the ECO PRO Mode, everything is geared towards greater efficiency and depending on your individual driving style, this results in a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 20 percent (according to an internal BMW fuel consumption study).
Another 5 percent can be saved by the additional function of coasting. This mode optimises accelerator and transmission response as well as shift points, and intelligently adapts the heating/air conditioning strategy. The Control Display shows you which BMW EfficientDynamics technologies are currently lowering your fuel consumption. You’ll also receive ECO PRO tips that relate to your current driving situation to help you boost efficiency even further.

The coasting function in ECO PRO Mode means that if no driving power is required within a speed range of 50 km/h to 160 km/h, the system disconnects the engine and the car coasts.

  • ECO PRO Route

    ECO PRO mode also includes ECO PRO Route which combines with the new generation of Navigation System Professional to draw on various parameters such as individual driving style as well as road conditions to calculate the most fuel-efficient route. The on-board computer displays your bonus mileage, in other words, how many additional kilometres you have gained from using ECO PRO mode.

BMW TWINPOWER TURBO ENGINES.

In petrol engines, BMW TwinPower Turbo technology combines a TwinScroll turbocharger with Valvetronic, Double-VANOS and High Precision Injection. In this way, BMW TwinPower Turbo significantly reduces the fuel consumption of petrol engines. At the same time, it boosts power output across a wide range of engine speeds.

AUTOMATIC START/STOP FUNCTION.

The Automatic Start/Stop function makes sure that fuel is only used when your car is actually driving.

Whilst waiting at traffic lights or in stop-and-go traffic, the Automatic Start/Stop function saves fuel by switching off the engine as soon as the car is idling and you have taken your foot off the clutch (manual transmission), or when you brake to a complete standstill (automatic transmission).

A signal in the Info Display indicates that the Automatic Start/Stop function is active. As soon as you shift into gear (manual transmission) or take your foot off the brake (automatic transmission), the engine switches itself back on in a split second so you can continue driving without delay.

  • Safe and comfortable

    The Automatic Start/Stop function never compromises driving comfort and safety, as it remains inactive if the engine has not reached its ideal running temperature, the interior has not yet been sufficiently heated/cooled, if the battery level is too low or if you are turning the steering wheel. A central control unit restarts the engine if required, even when the car is at a standstill. For example, if the car starts to roll forward or if the windscreen becomes foggy. The Automatic Start/Stop function can be switched off at any time with the push of a button.

Every time you brake, kinetic energy is generated and until recently this energy went unused. Brake Energy Regeneration takes advantage of this long-overlooked potential. It harnesses the coasting energy that is generated whenever you brake or take your foot off the accelerator and turns it into electricity.
This electricity is then used to charge the car battery. The intelligent energy management system means that the alternator no longer needs to run permanently, which reduces the strain on the generator. The result is reduced fuel consumption and increased performance, which is typical of BMW EfficientDynamics

Optimum Shift Indicator.

The engine’s electronics system identifies the most efficient gear, based on road conditions and engine speed. This means optimum gear changes and less fuel consumption. An arrow lights up in the Info Display to show you when it would be more efficient to shift into a higher or lower gear.
The system also recognises when you are accelerating fast, and will delay its recommendation accordingly until the engine speed is back up. Comparative tests have shown that vehicles with the Optimum Shift Indicator use around 4 percent less fuel

ELECTRIC POWER STEERING.

The Power steering with electrical support provides an optimum feel. It is less sensitive to bumps, while active anti-roll damping reliably evens out oscillating movements. You can make the steering characteristics tighter at any time using the optional sport switch.
Unlike conventional power steering, the steering with electrical support doesn’t use a hydraulic system but an intelligent solution based on an electric motor. The benefit is that the motor only operates when steering support is actually required. In other words when the steering wheel is moved. When driving straight ahead, which accounts for 90 percent of any trip (statistically speaking), it remains inactive and doesn’t use up any energy at all. This means that the steering with electrical support reduces the average fuel consumption of the car by about 0.3 litres/100 kilometres as compared to cars with hydraulic systems, making an important contribution to increasing efficiency. Since there is no hydraulic oil, maintenance and environmental pollution are also reduced.

  • Servotronic

    In some models you can combine the steering system with Servotronic. This permanently adjusts steering power to the car’s speed. To do this, it calculates the support necessary for the speed measured, and the motor of the electrical steering support is supplied with power accordingly. When steering at low speeds, for example through narrow, winding alleys, only minimal force is required. As speed increases, however, the steering support required is reduced continuously so as to ensure more direct contact with the road and therefore optimum directional stability.
